Joining the race schedule in 1987 as the Broward Stakes at Gulfstream Park, the Skip Away Stakes was run at 1 1/16 miles on turf in its first running but when returning three years later for the second running it had moved to the dirt going the same distance. Today the race is run a 1 3/16 miles on the dirt for horses 4 years and older in late March and early April. Sir Bear was a three-time winner of the race, winning in 1998, 1998 and 2002 with Todd Pletcher having the most wins as a trainer with five and Mike Smith having the most wins of any jockey at four.
