Daniel J. Dougherty made his career in the furniture business in Louisville, Ky. He got into Thoroughbred racing in 2009, and in 2012 he purchased a Curlin colt at the Keeneland September yearling sale for $25,000. That colt turned out to be Ride On Curlin, who set a track record when breaking his maiden at Ellis Park on July 13, 2013.
Dougherty turned down an offer of $1 million for the colt after that maiden effort. The colt has placed in multiple graded stakes and cemented his place in the 2014 Kentucky Derby starting gate.
