Big-Race Showdown: Kentucky Derby Championship Series Visits Fair Grounds, Turfway
The horse racing world like all other areas of society continues to make changes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and public health crisis. Most racetracks currently operating are doing so without spectators, and have instituted strict safety screening protocols for essential employees who are already on the grounds to provide daily care for horses. Charities are ramping up services to help track workers during these hard times, while many other organizations including the Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation are redirecting resources to support medical efforts to combat the spread of the virus and support backstretch workers. (All proceeds from the Old Smoke T-shirt on sale below will go to the TJC Safety Net Foundation.)
The upcoming week is highlighted by the final slate of Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” races, starting Wednesday at Keeneland Race Course with one race and then shifting to Belmont Park for five more. On Wednesday, the JPMorganChase Jessamine Stakes will be held at Keeneland for 2-year-old fillies on turf; it’s a “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, also held at Keeneland on Nov. 6. Belmont Park hosts four Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series races on Saturday: the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (qualifier for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic); Flower Bowl Stakes (Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf); Champagne Stakes (TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare); and Frizette Stakes (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies). The final “Win and You’re In” race of the prep season is held at Belmont on Sunday, where the Futurity Stakes offers a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.
The Jessamine will be shown live on NBCSN Wednesday during a show from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET, and also on TVG as part of its full-card coverage every day from Keeneland, Wednesday through Sunday.
The Belmont Park Breeders' Cup races will be televised on “America’s Day at the Races." The NYRA-produced show runs Wednesday through Monday (Columbus Day) on either FS1 or FS2. Check the schedule below for air times. The shows will also air on MSG+ and on regional Fox outlets Prime Ticket and Fox Sports San Diego – check NYRA’s website for those dates and times.
ABR's live streaming show “La Trifecta” continues this week, airing Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. ET. The show will be presented en Espanol and be hosted by Claudia Spadaro, Darwin Vizcaya, and Annise Montplaisir. The show will be streamed on ABR’s Facebook Live, and YouTube channels and on Annise's Twitter channel.
A don’t-miss highlight of this weekend’s radio coverage is "The Winner’s Circle," America’s Best Racing’s podcast presented by NYRA Bets. The show, hosted by Bram Weinstein, airs at 10 a.m. ET on Saturdays through Nov. 7 on Sports Map Radio. Subscribe to "The Winner's Circle" on Apple Podcasts to listen to archived episodes.
The Oct. 10 "Winner's Circle" guests are BloodHorse editor Evan Hammonds and Bri Mott, marketing director for StableDuel.
