Stars of Yesterday: Looking Back at Best Arkansas Derby Winners
The Road to the 2019 Breeders’ Cup World Championships is bustling with activity as August arrives, and Saturday’s marquee event, the $1 million, Grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, is shaping up to be a key contest in determining top contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park in November. The Whitney is a Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” Presented by America’s Best Racing automatic qualifier for the Classic and is expected to feature divisional leaders McKinzie, Vino Rosso, and Thunder Snow, among others.
NBC Sports will broadcast the Whitney on Saturday as the showcase of an hour-long show from Saratoga that will also include a live broadcast of the Longines Test Stakes for 3-year-old fillies. The show will air on NBCSN, running from 5 to 6 p.m. Eastern, and will include interviews and features with Whitney connections from NBC Sports’ horse racing team. The broadcast will be hosted by Ahmed Fareed, who will be joined by analysts Randy Moss and retired Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey as well as reporter Laffit Pincay III and reporter/handicapper Matt Bernier.
Saratoga’s racing is the focus of the ongoing "Saratoga Live" program produced by NYRA in partnership with FOX Sports, which began on July 11 and runs through Labor Day. "Saratoga Live," which is presented by America's Best Racing, Runhappy, and Claiborne Farm, will air each day of the Saratoga meet on FS2 and on various regional channels.
All of Saratoga's races, plus broadcasts from Del Mar and other tracks, will be featured on TVG as part of their comprehensive coast-to-coast racing coverage.
A highlight of the week’s radio coverage is “The Winner’s Circle” podcast presented The Stronach Group. The upcoming podcast airs Aug. 3 at 10 a.m. Eastern on SB Nation Radio (subscribe and access past episodes via Apple Podcasts here) and is hosted by Bram Weinstein, with racing analysis from retired Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens. The featured guests for the Aug. 3 podcast are Greg Wolf, co-host of NYRA's "Saratoga Live," and Evelyn Benoit of Brittyln Stable, whose filly Minit to Stardom won the Honorable Miss Handicap at Saratoga on July 24.
