The 144thPreakness Stakes, set for Saturday, May 18, at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, follows a controversial Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve that generated high television ratings on NBC and has kept horse racing in the national headlines in the week and a half since it was held.

Despite the absence of key horses such as Derby winner Country House and disqualified Derby first-place finisher Maximum Security, the Preakness should still keep the momentum high for horse racing heading into the summer, with 13 horses slated to start in a competitive event.

Television coverage of the Preakness is presented by NBC Sports, which will offer over seven hours of live broadcasts starting on Friday, May 17, with a two-hour bloc on NBCSN. That show, airing from 3 to 5 p.m. ET, will feature coverage of the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes for 3-year-old fillies along with Preakness previews and features.

On Saturday, May 18, Preakness coverage runs from 2 to 5 p.m. ET on NBCSN from Pimlico and then switches over to NBC from 5 to 7:15 p.m. ET. Over the two days, NBC Sports Group will cover 11 races live.

The Preakness post time is set for approximately 6:48 p.m. ET on Saturday.

NBC Sports Group’s coverage of the Preakness features host Mike Tirico; analysts Randy Moss and Jerry Bailey, the Hall of Fame jockey and two-time Kentucky Derby winner; handicappers/reporters Eddie Olczyk and Britney Eurton; reporters Donna Brothers (also on horseback), Kenny Rice, Nick Luck, Laffit Pincay III, Kenny Rice, and Ahmed Fareed, who makes his Preakness Stakes debut; and race caller Larry Collmus..

Saturday’s show includes a feature on Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, who collaborated to win the Triple Crown last year with Justify, and who are teaming up again in the Preakness Stakes with Improbable. Baffert aims for his record-breaking eighth victory in the Preakness Stakes.

On Saturday’s coverage, NBC Sports will look back on the dramatic conclusion to this year’s Kentucky Derby. Maximum Security owner Gary West joins NBC’s broadcast for a live interview about the disqualification of his horse. In addition, Sports Illustrated writer Tim Layden will present an essay on the historical context of what happened at Churchill Downs

To capture every moment at Pimlico, NBC Sports will once again utilize an array of special cameras, and the return of an aerial camera over the full backstretch for the Preakness Stakes. Proving essential in last year’s fog-filled race, the camera will provide a unique perspective from 15-18 feet above the track at Pimlico, and can travel alongside the horses at up to 80 MPH.

In addition, Norwegian DJ, producer and songwriter Kygo, three-time Grammy Award nominee Logic and global DJ superstar Diplo will rock the infield with performances of their biggest hits throughout the NBC broadcast.

In addition to traditional television coverage, NBC offers enhanced live streaming coverage via www.nbcsports.com and the NBC Sports App. NBC and NBCSN coverage will be streamed both at www.nbcports.com and the NBC Sports App via the “TV Everywhere” subscription service. The NBC Sports App is available on the iTunes App Store, Google Play, Windows Store, Roku Channel Store, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire.

Live coverage of racing from Pimlico will also be provided by TVG on both Friday and Saturday.

A highlight of the week’s coverage is “The Winner’s Circle” podcast, presented by The Stronach Group. The upcoming podcast airs on Preakness day, May 18, at 10 a.m. ET on SB Nation Radio and on the SB Nation Radio app and is hosted by Bram Weinstein, with analysis from retired Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens. Featured guest for the May 18 podcast is Sean J. McManus, chairman of CBS Sports and the son of the late Maryland-based broadcaster and Preakness icon Jim McKay.
