This Sunday marks Clasico del Caribe day at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. If you’re planning a day at the races, here’s what you should know before you go.
1. Gulfstream Park will host the Clasico for the third consecutive time.
The Clasico is becoming a South Florida tradition, with horses and their people from South America and the Caribbean converging in Hallandale Beach to prove who’s the best of the year. You won’t want to miss it!
2. The Clasico headlines a full afternoon of international racing in South Florida.
The Clasico headlines a fantastic card that includes four other big races: the Copa Invitacional del Caribe Stakes, the Copa Velocidad del Caribe Stakes, the Copa Dama del Caribe Stakes, and the Compa Confraternidad del Caribe Stakes.
3. Twelve horses are scheduled to run in the big race.
There are a full dozen horses slated to run in the Clasico: Thibaut, Gran Omero, Papa Candelo, Fix, El Santo, Senor Concerto, Supreme Soul, Juice Man, Lopecitos, Turpin Time, The Brother Slew, and Doctor Sotelo. 4. Jamaica’s back!
After an absence of more than a decade, Jamaican horses are back at the Clasico. In fact, two Jamaican horses will run in the Clasico del Caribe: Juice Man and 2019 Jamaican Triple Crown winner Supreme Soul.
5. Five nations will be represented in the Clasico.
Horses representing Mexico, Puerto Rico/the U.S., Venezuela, Panama, and Jamaica will all be running in Sunday’s big race.
6. More than $700,000 and international bragging rights are up for grabs throughout the afternoon.
The big races on Clasico day are worth more than $700,000 – the Clasico itself has a $300,000 purse – plus, a win in one of these races means esteem for the next year. It’s going to be a hotly contested afternoon, so be sure to be there!
7. You can get VIP tickets or enjoy the afternoon for free.
There are a couple of ways to enjoy Clasico day at Gulfstream Park: you can stroll in for free and have a casual afternoon, or you can turn on the glamour with VIP tickets to The Stretch. There’s no wrong way to take in a day at the track, so pick your way to enjoy the day!
8. Come for the races, stay for the party.
Put your dancing shoes on, because reggaeton sensation De La Ghetto and DJ Mr Mauricio will be playing the Clasico this year. Tickets are available here, so be sure to buy before you go!
9. Come hungry.
Don’t eat a big lunch before you head to Gulfstream, because the food is going to be amazing. In addition to its regular features, ticket holders in The Stretch will be treated to an eclectic mix of gourmet bites and several bars to savor while watching races and winning bets.
10. The day doesn’t have to end with the Clasico.
While the Clasico is definitely the big draw on Sunday, Gulfstream Park offers so much more than an afternoon of racing. The track also has a casino, several high-end restaurants, a shopping center, and a Christmas village. Make it the perfect December day and stay awhile!
