Tacos and Trifectas: Tacos El Trompo, Pair of Breeders’ Cup Plays

Events / Travel

Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).

Stop back if you love tacos and want to get a trifecta play!

This week’s eatery:

Tacos El Trompo

Al Pastor Tacos

Score: 7.3

  • Regularly stationed at the Pike in Long Beach
  • Quick service
  • Good selection of Mexican sodas
  • Green salsa had a good balance of heat and flavor

Recap of the previous wager: Our key horse Andesh had a bit of an uncomfortable trip and failed to make an impact when finishing seventh.

This week’s trifecta key:

Friday, Nov. 1

Santa Anita Park, Race 6, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Presented by Coolmore America, 4:52 p.m. ET

#14 HIT THE ROAD (10-1 odds): He was pulled hard entering the first turn while dropping back to last in the early stages. He then made a strong middle move around the final turn and pulled away to win impressively over this course in his stakes debut. He posted a good final time and appeared to have more energy in reserve. He picks up one of the best local riders over this course and I think he’s going to improve once again.

Strategy on $100 Budget:

$.50 cent trifecta: 14 with 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,12 with 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,12 ($28)

$.50 cent trifecta: 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,12 with 14 with 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,12 ($28)

$.50 cent trifecta: 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,12 with 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,12 with 14 ($28)

$16 win on #14 Hit The Road

Saturday, Nov. 2

Santa Anita Park, Race 6, Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, 4:10 p.m. ET

#1 GIANT EXPECTATIONS (12-1 odds): He ran one of his best races in defeat last time out when missing by a head vs. Catalina Cruiser in the Pat O’Brien Stakes at Del Mar. He added the blinkers in his last two starts and he has put together two good efforts. There is plenty of speed in this field to set up his late kick and he should be able to save plenty of ground from this inside post.

Strategy on $100 Budget:

$.50 cent trifecta: 1 with 2,3,4,5,7,9,10 with 2,3,4,5,7,9,10 ($28)

$.50 cent trifecta: 2,3,4,5,7,9,10 with 1 with 2,3,4,5,7,9,10 ($28)

$.50 cent trifecta: 2,3,4,5,7,9,10 with 2,3,4,5,7,9,10 with 1 ($28)

$16 win on #1 GIANT EXPECTATIONS

ROI Year to date: $1800 wagered / $106 returned
