Tacos and Trifectas: Savory Carne Asada and a Rebel Surprise

Events / Travel

Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).

Stop back if you love tacos and want to get a trifecta play!

This week’s eatery:

The Taco Stand

621 Pearl St

La Jolla, CA 92037

Carne Asada Score: 9.2

  • One of the best carne asada tacos I have ever eaten
  • Authentic flavors
  • Good selection of drinks
  • Score would have been even higher with better-tasting salsas

Recap of previous wager: Our key horse Curlin Grey was never a factor.

This week’s trifecta key:

Saturday, March 16

Oaklawn Park, Race 10, $750,000 Rebel Stakes, 7:06 p.m. ET

#2 Laughing Fox (10-1 odds): He broke slowly, steadied briefly, and dropped back toward the rear of the field early on in his last race. He began to make up ground on his own down the backstretch and I liked how he battled back in deep stretch to win going away. He looked to have plenty of run left past the finish line. He did benefit from a fast pace last time out but he showed he can close into slower fractions two starts back. I think he’s getting better as the races go along.

Strategy on $100 Budget:

$1 Trifecta: 2 with 3,5,6,7,8,10 with 3,5,6,7,8,10 ($30)

$1 Trifecta: 3,5,6,7,8,10 with 2 with 3,5,6,7,8,10 ($30)

$.1 Trifecta: 3,5,6,7,8,10 with 3,5,6,7,8,10 with 2 ($30)

$10 Win on #2 Laughing Fox

ROI Year to date: $500 wagered / $0 returned
