Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).
Stop back if you love tacos and want to get a trifecta play!
This week’s eatery:
The French Fry Factory
Food stand at Santa Anita Park
- Surprisingly good asada tacos for a place called The French Fry Factory
- Green salsa had a good medium level of flavor
- Three tacos for $10
- Quick service
Recap of previous wager: Our key horse Win Win Win got a good trip from his outside post position but was unable to accelerate in the stretch and could only finish seventh.
This week’s trifecta key:
Saturday, June 8
#8 Pavel (20-1 odds): He hesitated a bit at the start of the Dubai World Cup but got away in good order and settled toward the back of the pack. He then continued to race wide on both turns and made a good middle move to pass runners and move up to third in the stretch before getting caught in the final strides. I thought it was a good effort considering all the recent travel he had done and the competition he was facing. His main rider is back aboard today and i think there are legitimate excuses for three of his last four outings. His Stephen Foster win was visually impressive and he can be in the mix of things if he repeats that effort. His best Beyer Speed Figure was earned over this track when he finished third in the Jockey Club Gold Cup in 2017.
