Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).
Stop back if you love tacos and want to get a trifecta play!
This week’s eatery:
Costco Chicken Street Tacos
- Chicken had a good marinade; that’s what saved the tacos
- Salsa was too bland
- Would prefer corn tortillas over flour
Recap of previous wager: Our key horse King of Speed was never involved and only beat one rival to the finish. After two solid years in this Tacos and Trifectas series, this year has been one of those bad streaks that I don’t wish on any fellow horseplayer. Let’s turn it around this week.
This week’s Trifecta key:
Saturday, Aug. 17
#6 Higher Power (8-1 odds): He chased the leaders and put in a good effort when finishing second behind the sharp winner Bombard. He’s worked twice since that last race, and I liked the way he was moving in his Aug. 10 workout when going six furlongs. The connections thought highly enough of him that they immediately threw him against tough competition in the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita three starts back when finishing fifth. I think his latest two turf outings have primed him well to get back on the dirt in a spot like this, and he picks up the hottest rider of the meet in Flavien Prat.
