Tacos and Trifectas: California Fish Grill, Opening Day Play at Del Mar

Events / Travel

Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).

Stop back if you love tacos and want to get a trifecta play!

This week’s eatery:

California Fish Grill

Score: 8.7

  • Tasty fish taco
  • Combo plate with rice, beans, and a soft drink for under $9
  • Variety of salsas
  • Various locations throughout Southern California

Recap of previous wager: Our key horse, Seismic Wave, broke slow, steadied a few times and flattened out down the stretch and was unable to hit the board.

This week’s Trifecta key:

Wednesday, July 17

Del Mar, Race 8, $100,000 Runhappy Oceanside Stakes, 8:30 p.m. ET

#5 King of Speed (6-1 odds): He found himself leading from the start for the first time in his career in his previous race. He set comfortable fractions throughout but was unable to hold off Neptune’s Storm, who earned his second consecutive stakes victory. I thought it was a good effort considering it was his first time setting the pace and he did battle back in deep stretch after losing the lead. He narrowly lost second by a neck to Parsimony, who came back to finish second in the Grade 3 Los Alamitos Derby behind the three-time Grade 1 winner Game Winner. King of Speed finished a better-than-it-looked fourth two starts back when having a rough trip throughout in the Singletary Stakes. He’s worked four times since his last race, and I think he’s going to enjoy cutting back in distance to a mile. He broke his maiden by winning a stakes on this Del Mar turf course last summer.

Strategy on $100 Budget:

$.50-cent trifecta: 5 with 1,2,3,4,6,8,10,11 with 1,2,3,4,6,8,10,11 ($28)

$.50-cent trifecta: 1,2,3,4,6,8,10,11 with 5 with 1,2,3,4,6,8,10,11 ($28)

$.50-cent trifecta: 1,2,3,4,6,8,10,11 with 1,2,3,4,6,8,10,11 with 5 ($28)

$16 Win on #5 King of Speed

ROI Year to date: $1200 wagered / $0 returned
