The third annual Real Rider Cup is coming up on Sept. 20, and if you have questions about the event, we have answers! Below are six key facts to know about the 2019 Real Rider Cup.

1. It’s a horse show, but it’s also so much more than that.

The Real Rider Cup pairs horse racing personalities with retired racehorses in a jump-off that showcases Thoroughbreds’ versatility and athleticism. The riders compete in teams, either on their own horses or on Thoroughbreds provided for them, and there is both a team prize and an individual prize for the best performances.

2. There are five teams this year.

The Real Rider Cup has five teams in 2019: Team Farm and Racing Managers; Team Freestyle, whose riders go sidesaddle, bridle-less, and other amazing feats; Team Jockeys; Team Race Track Kids, who are the children of racing personalities; and Team Media.

3. It’s raising money for important charities.

The Real Rider Cup is a fundraiser for the Retired Racehorse Project and New Vocations, two charities that seek to retrain and rehome off-the-track Thoroughbreds into new homes and careers.

4. This year, the Real Rider Cup has moved locations and will kick off an all-Thoroughbred horse show.

The 2019 Real Rider Cup will serve as the start of the he kick-off for the Fair Hill Thoroughbred Show, which follows on September 21-22. The Fair Hill Thoroughbred Show is a 501(c)(3) organization that supports riders of Thoroughbreds by providing affordable show fees, scholarships, stakes classes, and prizes in every division.

5. There’s a party, and you’re invited.

If you want to watch the Real Rider Cup in person, you have a party waiting for you. There’s a cash bar and food trucks: La Patrona, which is Fair Hill's outstanding local taco truck, will offer signature Mexican menu items as well as hot dogs; and also the local dairy Kilby Cream's ice cream truck. There will also be live music and Sagamore Spirit’s signature cocktail, Valhalla Brewery, and Chateau Bu-De Winery and Vineyard offering beer and wine! (Don’t worry – Uber is available in the area, so you can sample all the cocktails you want.)

6. You can donate in support of your favorite teams and riders.

Have a favorite rider you want to support? You can donate right here! Every little bit counts, and you’ll be helping outstanding retired racehorses find their forever homes.
