Victory Drink of the Month: Belle Vodka’s Hot Toddy Belle!
The Race: Cigar Mile Handicap
The Venue: Aqueduct
The Date: Dec. 7, 2019
The Winner: Maximum Security
The Toast: To another scintillating performance on the road to redemption. Gary and Mary Wests' charge will forever be remembered as the central player in one of the most controversial runnings of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve in history, as his disqualification divided fans around the world and overshadowed a truly impressive first-place finish. After a misstep in his next start, Maximum Security reeled off two dominating wins and then closed out 2019 with arguably his best-ever race, dusting Breeders’ Cup winner Spun to Run and several other quality horses in the Cigar Mile. That win solidified his credentials as champion 3-year-old male, and fueled anticipation for what his connections will say on the podium if he does earn the statuette at the Eclipse Awards in January. After the Race: Winter is here, and that means it’s time for warming up with Belle Vodka’s version of the classic Hot Toddy. Soothe that cold, banish that chill, and snuggle up in front of TVG, the TwinSpires smart TV app, or your live racing video provider of choice while you search for the next 2020 Kentucky Derby contender.
What’s Next: Dec. 26 is the traditional early transitional date for horse racing into the new year, as Santa Anita Park opens its winter-spring meet with five stakes races, four of them graded. With Gulfstream Park and Fair Grounds already running, and Oaklawn Park opening in January, it’s time to make plans to attend one of these elite race meets and soak in the unparalleled experience of a day at the races.
