Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI), which was positive in 2017.
Stop back each week if you love tacos and want a trifecta play!

Recap of previous wager: Our key horse, Century Dream, showed good speed in the Arlington Million Stakes. He took the lead and battled gamely to finish third (which would have given us a winning trifecta) but he was disqualified and placed fourth. One of the runners we used in the trifectas was scratched and that saved us $18 of the original budget.
I decided to go with the Del Mar Oaks Presented by The Jockey Club given that in the TVG Pacific Classic Stakes, I think the favorite Accelerate is the best horse in the race and I expect him to win at short odds. No value for me in that race so let’s go shopping for a price in the Del Mar Oaks.
This week’s Trifecta key:
Saturday, Aug. 18
Del Mar, Race 8, Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks Presented by The Jockey Club, 8:40 p.m. ET
#12 ANIMOSITY (8-1 odds): I thought her effort in the GIrade 2 San Clemente was much better than what it appears on paper. She was steadied sharply soon after the start, lost position, and settled at the back of the pack. She then looked to be rank and her rider had a difficult time getting her to settle going around the first turn. She was steadied multiple times, including when approaching the final turn when trying to make her move. She found room late and finished with good energy for sixth, beaten just under three lengths. She shows two workouts since that last race, and I think she’s ready to fire a big effort while making her second start on this course.
Strategy on $80 Budget:
