Tacos and Trifectas: Tasty Tacos and a Del Mar Stakes Play

Events / Travel

Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI), which was positive in 2017.

Stop back each week if you love tacos and want a trifecta play!

This week’s eatery:

Tacos La Central

920 N. Mt. Vernon Ave.

Colton, CA 92324

For the first time ever, as requested by a few of the readers, this is a repeat visit to a previously featured restaurant. Tacos La Central got a terrific score for their al pastor taco and this time we return to try their carne asada steak taco.

Score: 9.1

  • Carne asada beef was grilled over an open flame
  • Just the right amount of seasoning
  • Red salsa had just the right amount of heat
  • Handmade tortillas gives it the extra touch of authenticity
  • Good selection of Mexican sodas

Recap of previous wager: Our key horse STRIKE POWER got a good trip toward the outside behind the speed but was unable to make any impact and faded down the stretch. There was a late scratch of one of the runners we used in the trifecta so that actually saved us a total of $30 from the total money invested. It ended up being $70 instead of $100.

This week’s trifecta key:

Wednesday, July 18, Del Mar, Race 8, Oceanside Stakes, 8:30 p.m. ET

#10 Calexman (6-1 odds): He broke well, was eager to run and pulled his rider to the lead. He dueled through swift early fractions, put away the rival that was pressing him and held off all challengers late to post a visually impressive win. He has three published workouts right on schedule since that last win and I think he’s ready to run another big effort. The same rider that was aboard last time returns to ride once again and I like that his only race over this track resulted in a win last year. He also set the pace that day to break his maiden at this distance beating a field of 11 runners.

Strategy on $100 Budget:

$.50 Cent Trifecta: 10 with 2,3,4,5,7,9,12,13 with 2,3,4,5,7,9,12,13 ($28)

$.50 Cent Trifecta: 2,3,4,5,7,9,12,13 with 10 with 2,3,4,5,7,9,12,13 ($28)

$.50 Cent Trifecta: 2,3,4,5,7,9,12,13 with 2,3,4,5,7,9,12,13 with 10 ($28)

$16 Win on #10 Calexman

ROI Year to date: $954 wagered / $473.30 returned
