Tacos and Trifectas: Tasty Fish Tacos, Derby Trail Upset

Events / Travel

Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI), which was positive in 2017.

Stop back each week if you love tacos and want a trifecta play!

This week’s eatery:

Señor Baja

12592 E. Foothill Blvd.

Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.

Score: 9.1

The Good:

  • Fish tacos were great
  • One of the best red salsas i’ve ever had
  • Quick service
  • Drive-thru available

What to Improve:

  • Tortillas could have been better
  • A few of the menu items were overpriced

This week’s Trifecta key:

Saturday, Golden Gate Fields, Race 7, El Camino Real Derby, 6:57 p.m. ET

#9 Mugaritz (10-1 odds): He has really improved since getting ahold of this Tapeta surface at Golden Gate and joining this barn. He was caught in behind horses and had to steady numerous times down the backstretch. He appeared to be headstrong and the rider had a tight hold to try to get him to settle a few times. Once he got some room down the backstretch, it was too late to make up the ground on eventual winner Choo Choo who got the jump on him. He’s got good speed and he should be able to get himself into a good outside tracking position heading into the first turn.

Strategy on $80 Budget:

$1 Trifecta: 9 with 1,2,4,5,7 with 1,2,4,5,7 ($20)

$1 Trifecta: 1,2,4,5,7 with 9 with 1,2,4,5,7 ($20)

$1 Trifecta: 1,2,4,5,7 with 1,2,4,5,7 with 9 ($20)

$20 Win on #9 Mugaritz ($20)

ROI Year to date: $272 wagered / $88.80 returned
