Tacos and Trifectas: Tasty Drive-Thru Tacos, Hollywood Derby Longshot

Events / Travel

Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI), which was positive in 2017.

Stop back each week if you love tacos and want a trifecta play!

This week’s eatery:

Tacos Puro Jalisco 2

7500 Cerritos Ave.

Stanton, CA

Scores: Carne asada: 8.7

Al pastor: 8.2

  • Carne asada was perfectly cooked and seasoned
  • Al pastor marinade was more on the sweet side than the spicy side
  • Both the green and red salsas are tasty
  • Drive-thru open late – until midnight on Friday and Saturday
  • Short drive from Los Alamitos Race Course
  • Ask for salsa on the side so that tacos don’t get soggy during the drive

Recap of previous wager: Our key horse of Breeders’ Cup Friday Line of Duty was bet down heavily from the 10-1 morning line odds and won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. We cashed on the win bet and trifecta for a total of $472.10. Our key horse of Breeders’ Cup Saturday Giant Expectations was off slowly once again and was never a threat.

This week’s trifecta key:

Saturday, Dec. 1, Del Mar, Race 7, $300,000 Hollywood Derby, 6:30 ET

#9 Platinum Warrior (12-1 odds): He waited behind horses around the turn and was able to pick up a fifth-place finish in the Twilight Derby on Nov. 4. That was his first start in about three months and his first start for this new barn. Now he’s had about a month to regroup from that outing and I think he’s going to be sharper this time around. There should be plenty of early speed to set up his closing kick.

Strategy on $100 Budget:

$.50 Cent Trifecta: 9 with 1,2,3,4,6,8,11,13 with 1,2,3,4,6,8,11,13 ($28)

$.50 Cent Trifecta: 1,2,3,4,6,8,11,13 with 9 with 1,2,3,4,6,8,11,13 ($28)

$.50 Cent Trifecta: 1,2,3,4,6,8,11,13 with 1,2,3,4,6,8,11,13 with 9 ($28)

$16 to win on #9 Platinum Warrior

ROI year to date: $1,680 wagered/$1,441.30 returned
