Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI), which was positive in 2017.
Stop back each week if you love tacos and want a trifecta play!
This week’s eatery:
Los Angeles County Fair
- Crunchy and crispy batter on the shrimp taco
- Flavorful salsa
- Tasty seasonings
- A bit overpriced given the size of the portion
Recap of previous wager: Our key horse Animosity was declared a non-starter after a bad start at the gate. All our wagers were refunded.
This week’s trifecta key:
Saturday, Sept. 29, Santa Anita Park, Race 12, Unzip Me Stakes, 8:43 p.m. ET
#4 Suspicious Spouse (8-1 odds): I like the progression she has showed in her last two races since switching to the turf. I was impressed with her win last time out given the final time and the way she did it. She broke fast and took the lead without much urging from her rider. She then accelerated nicely on her own around the turn and finished strong with her rider only going to the stick once or twice. She’s taking a big class hike today but she could very well be ready for the test.
