Tacos and Trifectas: Bing Crosby Longshot

Events / Travel

Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI), which was positive in 2017.

Stop back each week if you love tacos and want a trifecta play!

This week’s eatery:

Pier 76 Fish Grill
95 Pine Ave
Long Beach, CA 90802

I have to say that the fish was very tasty and that’s what saved this taco from getting a lower score. It needs a better salsa. The taco was a bit dry and needed a touch of heat from a pico de gallo or a house salsa.

Score: 7.4

  • Smoked fish had a nice flavor
  • Fresh and crispy cabbage
  • Double tortilla is a good way of making sure taco doesn’t fall apart
  • Good special of $2 tacos on Tuesdays

Recap of previous wager: Our key horse CALEXMAN showed that good speed we talked about and he was able to set the pace and battle gamely down the stretch to hold on for third. We caught a pair of 11-1 longshots in first and second and our trifecta with Calexman keyed for third hit for a nice return of $495.90. One of the horses we used in the trifectas was scratched so we saved an additional $21 from the original $100 budget.

This week’s trifecta key:

Saturday, July 28, Del Mar, Race 9, Bing Crosby Stakes, 9 p.m. ET

#8 St. Joe Bay (8-1 odds): Last month he broke well, went to the lead, took pressure from fellow rival American Anthem the entire way and battled gamely to just miss by a nose. That was a terrific effort considering the fractions he was posting and the additional pace pressure he was getting from the 4-to-5 favorite. I liked how he battled back in deep stretch to almost win it. He finished almost two lengths clear of the third-place finisher who then returned to win his next race seven days ago here at Del Mar against a strong group of optional claimers. I like his post position to the outside of American Anthem and I think that gives him a good edge to be the one who applies pace pressure this time around.

Strategy on $60 Budget:
$.50 Cent Trifecta: 8 with 2,3,5,7,9,11 with 2,3,5,7,9,11 ($15)
$.50 Cent Trifecta: 2,3,5,7,9,11 with 8 with 2,3,5,7,9,11 ($15)
$.50 Cent Trifecta: 2,3,5,7,9,11 with 2,3,5,7,9,11 with 8 ($15)
$15 Win on #8 St. Joe Bay

ROI Year to date: $993 wagered / $969.20 returned
