Stars of Yesterday: Looking Back at Best Arkansas Derby Winners
Victory Drink of the Month: Belle Vodka’s Southern Belle, the ideal winner’s circle cocktail!
The Race: Ricoh Woodbine Mile Stakes
The Venue: Woodbine Racetrack
The Date: Sept. 15, 2018
The Winner: Oscar Performance
The Toast: To a stirring comeback win by a prior Breeders’ Cup winner that should set him up perfectly for this fall’s World Championships. Oscar Performance had been pulled up as a precautionary measure by jockey Jose Ortiz during the Arlington Million Stakes in August after he took a bad step. The Kitten’s Joy colt, who won the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, was given a clean bill of health after being examined, and he rebounded with authority in the Woodbine Mile, scoring by 1 ½ lengths and earning an automatic berth in the Nov. 3 Breeders’ Cup Mile via the ‘Win and You’re In’ Challenge Series.
After the Race: The go-to cocktail for watching primetime college football with friends, preferably a game from the greatest conference in the world – the Southeastern!
What’s Next: No horse racing event channels the spirit of big-time college football like Keeneland’s fall meet in Lexington. Come for the early tailgate parties, and stay for some of the best Thoroughbred racing in North America, including key “Win and You’re In” races for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The fall meet begins on Friday, Oct. 5.
