Where to Watch/Listen During Travers Week

Racing at its best at Saratoga. (Eclipse Sportswire)

The Travers Stakes often goes a long way toward determining the champion of the 3-year-old division in years without a dominant horse during the Triple Crown season, and that’s certainly the case in 2017. The 148th running of the “Midsummer Derby,” held this Saturday at Saratoga. is scheduled to have one of its largest fields in history, with the winners of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Always Dreaming), the Preakness Stakes (Cloud Computing) and the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRABets (Tapwrit) all scheduled to run, joined by such other graded stakes winners as Girvin, Irap, McCraken, and West Coast.

The $1.25 million Travers signals to racing fans that Saratoga’s storied summer meet is coming to a conclusion, and the days building up to the race are often some of the most exciting and eventful on the calendar. Television coverage will be led by NBC Sports' national broadcast of the Travers, which airs on NBC from 4:30 – 6 p.m. ET as part of its its “Win and You’re In” Series Presented by Lane’s End and America’s Best Racing. While the Travers is not a “Win and You’re In” race, NBC’s telecast will also show the $1 million Sword Dancer Stakes from Saratoga, which is a Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” qualifying race for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf.

In addition to NBC’s broadcast, other stakes races from Saratoga’s loaded Saturday card will be broadcast as part of "Saratoga Live," NYRA's flagship show presented by Claiborne Farm. Three additional graded stakes at Saratoga on Saturday are Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” qualifying races – the $750,000 Personal Ensign Stakes (Longines Distaff), the $500,000 Ketel One Ballerina Stakes (Filly & Mare Sprint), and the $700,000 Priority One Jets Forego Stakes (Las Vegas Dirt Mile). "Saratoga Live" will air from 2 p.m. –  4:30 p.m. ET and will be available in 75 million households nationally through  Fox Sports 2 and regionally through MSG+Fox Sports Prime TicketFox Sports San DiegoFox Sports Ohio and the Altitude Sports Network.

Del Mar will also host a Breeders’ Cup qualifier on Saturday: the $200,000 Pat O’Brien Stakes, which grants to its winner an automatic berth in the Las Vegas Dirt Mile. TVG will air the Pat O’Brien as part of its comprehensive Del Mar coverage.

A highlight of the week’s radio and online streaming coverage is the upcoming “The Winner’s Circle” podcast, presented by America’s Best Racing in conjunction with SB Nation Radio. Hosted by Bram Weinstein, the Aug. 26 podcast features scheduled guest Brent Musburger, the recently-retired legendary sports announcer. The program airs at 10 a.m. ET on the SB Nation Radio network of stations, at www.sbnationlive.com, and on the SB Nation Radio app.
