Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).
Stop back each week if you love tacos and want a trifecta play!
This week’s eatery:
The Taco Man
The Taco Man was surprisingly very good. I enjoyed the al pastor tacos and their green salsa. I originally thought it was going to be more of a fusion taqueria but it’s actually got an authentic flavor. Good location. Easy to find. Will definitely visit again.
- Al pastor had a good authentic flavor
- Green salsa is great.
- Tacos are only $1.69
- They have Squirt soda, the real made in Mexico Squirt in the glass bottle.
What to Improve:
- Make it easier to grab more salsas. If you want more salsa or try one of their other options, you have to go back to the counter and ask again. That’s no fun.
- Service could be a tad faster.
- The order of chips was disappointing, a bit stale and cold. They didn’t taste like they make them there.
This week’s Trifecta key:
Saturday, Oct. 7, Santa Anita Park, Race 7, 6:32 p.m. ET
#3 Run Jeanne Run (6-1 odds): He broke slow, veered in, and was last of all early on in his debut when breaking from the tricky inside post at Los Alamitos. He didn’t seem to like the dirt kickback early on but I liked the way he ran on after drifting to the outside part of the track around the turn. He ran on gamely down the stretch to finish a decent fourth. With a better trip, he would have easily gotten third or second in that field. With that debut experience, I expect a much better effort today.
Strategy on $80 budget:
$1 Trifecta: 3 with 1,2,4,8,9 with 1,2,4,8,9 ($20)
$1 Trifecta: 1,2,4,8,9 with 3 with 1,2,4,8,9 ($20)

$20 Win on #3 Run Jeanne Run ($20)
