Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).
Stop back each week if you love tacos and want a trifecta play!
This week’s eatery:
Tacos El Gavilan
115 E Baseline Road
I went with the carne asada tacos. Both salsas are good but I give the slight edge to the red salsa. Location is easy to find on major streets and it’s a very clean restaurant.
- Tacos are only $1.65
- Pineapple water is refreshing
- Tasty salsas
- Free-to-grab sides are a nice option to build your tacos
What to Improve:
- Carne asada was too dry and tough for my taste. Needs better flavor
This week’s Trifecta key:
Saturday, Sept. 9, Los Alamitos Race Course, Race 9, 8:58 p.m. ET
#7 Fabrication (6-1 odds): Don’t be too harsh on that dull debut effort. It can be tough to make a big impression on your debut run when breaking from the inside post going only five furlongs. He broke slow and veered in soon after the start. He was essentially eliminated after that and just ran toward the back of the pack throughout. He’s a first-time-gelding today and I expect an improved effort.
Strategy on $80 Budget:
$1 Trifecta: 7 with 3,4,5,6,8 with 3,4,5,6,8 ($20)
$1 Trifecta: 3,4,5,6,8 with 7 with 3,4,5,6,8 ($20)
$1 Trifecta: 3,4,5,6,8 with 3,4,5,6,8 with 7 ($20)
