Events / Travel

Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).

This week’s eatery:

Tacos Don Goyo

Downey, Calif.

Score: 8.8

Tacos Don Goyo is located on the corner of Telegraph Road and Manzanar Avenue in the city of Downey. Al Pastor was tasty and would definitely have gotten a higher score if it wasn’t for the slow service and cold food. Aside from that, I still gave it a pretty high score because they had a good taste. I’ll give them a pass for the service because I did notice that they were short staffed. There were only two people running the place on a busy night: the cook and a cashier that was doing everything she could to help out. Handmade tortillas and good salsas saved the day. I plan on going back and hopefully the service is better.

The Good:

  • Al Pastor had a good authentic flavor
  • Both the red and green salsas are tasty
  • Handmade tortillas
  • Tacos are only $1.50
  • Good selection of Mexican sodas

What to Improve:

  • Service and seating. There seemed to be enough space to add a few more tables.

This week’s Trifecta key:

Saturday, Sept. 30, Santa Anita Park, Race 9, Rodeo Drive Stakes, 7:34 p.m. ET

#7 Beau Recall (8-1 odds): If we ignore her debut and her trip to Belmont Park, we’re looking at a very good resume. She finally got away from the talented Sircat Sally and lost a tough photo in the Del Mar Oaks. She was in front before the wire and after the wire. It was just a tough beat for her and anyone holding a win bet on her (including me). I’m giving her another chance today. She draws a better post today and should be rolling late once again. There’s some speed in this field to set up her closing kick. The odds should be good, too.

Strategy on $80 Budget:

$1 Trifecta: 7 with 2,3,5,9,10 with 2,3,5,9,10 ($20)

$1 Trifecta: 2,3,5,9,10 with 7 with 2,3,5,9,10 ($20)

$1 Trifecta: 2,3,5,9,10 with 2,3,5,9,10 with 7 ($20)

$20 Win on #7 Beau Recall ($20)

ROI Year to date: $1040 wagered / $166.10 returned
