Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).
Stop back each week if you love tacos and want a trifecta play!
This week’s eatery:
El Roto Taco Truck
On the corner of Ocean and Pine Avenue, Long Beach, Calif
This has been a regular location for them for the past few months, and you can usually spot the truck until late at night. There are a few tables set up, but there’s also plenty of seating on the patio. It’s located across the walkway that leads to the Long Beach Convention Center.
- Three tacos and a soda for $8 is a good price for a taco truck in this area.
- Al Pastor and Asada Tacos had good flavor.
- Green salsa is a must try.
What to Improve:
- Not a lot of parking on that side of the street. You might have to park ahead and walk back.
- They had just run out of onions and cilantro. I also got the last slice of lime left.
This week’s Trifecta key:
Saturday, Del Mar, Race 6, 6 p.m. ET
#7 Bowie (8-1 odds): She had been away since her debut win at Saratoga last summer, and I thought her latest race was needed. She showed plenty of speed while not asked for much more by her jockey and battled gamely until weakening at the top of the stretch. I think she’ll be fitter today, and I also like the switch to the turf. She’s lightly raced and I don’t think we’ve seen the best of her yet.
Strategy on $80 Budget:
$1 trifecta: 7 with 1,3,6,9,10 with 1,3,6,9,10 ($20)
$1 trifecta: 1,3,6,9,10 with 7 with 1,3,6,9,10 ($20)
$1 trifecta: 1,3,6,9,10 with 1,3,6,9,10 with 7 ($20)
$20 win on #7 Bowie ($20)
