Events / Travel

Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).

Stop back each week if you love tacos and want a trifecta play!

This week’s eatery:

Tacos El Gordo

Chula Vista, Calif.

Score: 9.9

The best tacos al pastor I have ever devoured. The al pastor marinade has a great taste and the salsa compliments the taco without being too spicy. Make sure you ask for a side order of grilled onions and chiles. Tacos are prepared in front of you and that’s what gives them a fresh flavor. The ordering process can be a very long wait time during lunch or dinner hours but it’s worth it. The only locations they have are in Tijuana, Mexico; San Diego; and Las Vegas.

The Good:

  • Al pastor is my favorite
  • Sauted onions and chiles
  • Open late (they close at 4 a.m. on weekends)

What to Improve:

  • The ordering process
  • Add glass-bottle Mexican sodas to the menu
  • Parking space
  • Open more locations

This week’s Trifecta keys:

Friday, Nov. 3, Del Mar, Race 8, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, 6:50 p.m. ET

#4 Catholic Boy (12-1 odds): I was very impressed with his victory at Saratoga. He didn’t get away all that fast but was able to settle into a good spot along the inside while saving ground. He had to alter path in the stretch and finished up with big strides late to win going away. That was only his second race and I don’t think we have seen the best of him yet.

Strategy on $80 Budget:

$1 Trifecta: 4 with 1,6,7,9,12 with 1,6,7,9,12 ($20)

$1 Trifecta: 1,6,7,9,12 with 4 with 1,6,7,9,12 ($20)

$1 Trifecta: 1,6,7,9,12 with 1,6,7,9,12 with 4 ($20)

$20 Win on #4 Catholic Boy ($20)

Saturday, Nov. 4, Del Mar, Race 9, Breeders’ Cup Mile, 7:19 p.m. ET

#5 World Approval (9-2 odds): He has looked terrific in his last two victories which happened to be at this distance. He doesn’t need the lead to be effective but he does own terrific tactical speed that I think will have him in a great spot throughout. The three inside runners all have plenty of speed and I think he will be able to track that group while saving some ground.

Strategy on $80 Budget:

$1 Trifecta: 5 with 4,6,10,12,13 with 4,6,10,12,13 ($20)

$1 Trifecta: 4,6,10,12,13 with 5 with 4,6,10,12,13 ($20)

$1 Trifecta: 4,6,10,12,13 with 4,6,10,12,13 with 5 ($20)

$20 Win on #5 World Approval ($20)

ROI Year to date: $1440 wagered / $1127.60 returned
