Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).
Stop back each week if you love tacos and want a trifecta play!
This week’s eatery:
Schwanies Grill at The Gap
Los Alamitos Race Course
- Authentic street style tacos
- Hefty portion in each taco
What to Improve:
- Tortillas could have been fresher
- Red salsa had a good kick but it could use a bit more flavor
This week’s Trifecta key:
Saturday, Santa Anita Park, Race 7, Grade 1 American Oaks, 6:30 p.m. ET
#6 Beau Recall (6-1 odds): I have respected her all year long and have supported her at the windows as well, including her tough beat two starts ago in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks, in which she finished second by a nose. She had a tough trip at Keeneland last time out and was a non-factor at Belmont Park earlier this year. I give her two legitimate excuses for those two outings and if you ignore those efforts, you’re left with a win and four seconds since arriving from Ireland. I think the freshening since October will have her ready to go, and I expect a big effort from her. Her closing style should fit this race well.
Strategy on an $80 Budget:
$1 trifecta: 6 with 1,4,8,9,10 with 1,4,8,9,10 ($20)
$1 trifecta: 1,4,8,9,10 with 6 with 1,4,8,9,10 ($20)
$1 trifecta: 1,4,8,9,10 with 1,4,8,9,10 with 6 ($20)
$20 win on #6 Beau Recall ($20)
ROI Year to date: $1,920 wagered / $2,840.40 returned
