Open Letter to America: Time to Appreciate Arrogate

Dear America,

There is a horse here in the United States that is the best in the world. That may not surprise many of you. Americans are known for our national exceptionalism. But in the sport of horse racing, much like in math scores, the United States often lags behind the rest of the world.

But there is a horse, racing in America right now, that has captured the attention of the entire world. That horse isn’t American Pharoah, although he certainly did that when he won the Triple Crown and the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2015. No, this horse is currently racing, while American Pharoah has hung up his saddlecloth for good.

It also isn’t Always Dreaming, winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands. This horse did not compete in the Kentucky Derby, or the Preakness Stakes, or even the Belmont Stakes. While this horse never run in any of the three most-watched horse races in America, he did beat the 2014 Kentucky Derby winner as well as the second- and third-place finishers from the 2016 Kentucky Derby and the fourth-place finisher from 2015. Arrogate also defeated the winners of the 2014 and 2016 Preakness Stakes and the winner and runner-up from the 2016 Belmont Stakes.

So who is this horse you ask? It’s a 4-year-old gray colt bred in Kentucky by Clearsky Farms. It’s the winner of seven straight races, including four straight Grade/Group 1 races. It’s the winner of more than $17 million in purse money, the most money won by any racehorse ever in history.

The best racehorse in the world is Arrogate.

I still remember the first time I saw this amazing horse. It was at the 2016 Travers Stakes. I remember thinking the horse looked handsome in the post parade, as expensive gray horses often do. But I did not bet on him. He was stepping up from an optional-claiming race at Del Mar. I didn’t believe he was ready for the other horses in the race. Horses like Exaggerator, who won the Preakness, or Creator, who won the Belmont. I didn’t even think he was as good as the other Baffert-trained horse in that race, American Freedom, who had run second in the Haskell Invitational Stakes. I wasn’t the only one. Arrogate’s regular rider, Rafael Bejarano, opted to ride on American Freedom instead. The public also sided with me and Bejarano. Arrogate’s odds in that race were 11.70-to-1.

Arrogate led for essentially the entire race. He set very fast fractions. Watching the horses race behind him around each turn, I was sure that they would all pass him in the stretch, catching him with their saved energy as he tired from running so fast. But that isn’t what happened. Arrogate never slowed down. In fact, he sped up. He broke free of the pack and won the race by 13 1/2 lengths. It was stunning. Arrogate broke the record for both the Travers Stakes and the 1 ¼-mile distance at historic Saratoga Race Course - a record that had stood for 37 years.

Arrogate followed that incredible performance by taking on California Chrome in the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Classic. California Chrome at that point was undefeated in 2016, having won six straight races. The then-5-year-old winner of the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes was experiencing a major resurgence after struggling at four, and he was the betting favorite in the Classic against the younger Arrogate.

California Chrome ran the best race of his entire life that day, putting up the fastest speed figure of his storied and accomplished career. It wasn’t enough. Arrogate beat him by half a length. The victory earned the younger horse the title of Longines World’s Best Racehorse for 2016.

This year, Arrogate has remained on top of the World’s Best Racehorse rankings as he has sought out the toughest competition and the biggest purses in the world. He posted a runaway 4 ¾-length win in the inaugural running of the $12-million Pegasus World Cup Invitational, in which he decisively won his rematch with California Chrome in what would be that horse’s final race. He then raced in the $10-million Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline, where he fell back to last place after breaking poorly then rallied from last to win the race by 2 1/4 lengths in a dramatic finish.

Not since Cigar has a horse been so shockingly good. A horse who one day nobody is talking about manages to become the most-admired horse on planet Earth in the span of just four races? That may be unprecedented. Arrogate has defeated quality horses at every stage of their careers. He has won on the lead and coming from behind. He has won on both coasts. He has won overseas. He has proven that he has more than just speed … he has talent, he has a will to win.

America, you don’t know how lucky we are to have a horse like Arrogate racing at our racetracks, kicking dirt in the faces of our best and brightest horseflesh, confounding our gamblers who always want to beat the chalk.

The word “arrogate” means to make undue claims presumptuously, from vanity — such as the pope arrogating dominion over kings. Once, last summer, Arrogate made such claims. When he ran in the Travers Stakes, nary more than a couple of allowance wins under his belt, he arrogated his right to race among the best 3-year-olds in America. After he won that race, decisive fashion notwithstanding, he arrogated his right to race against California Chrome in the premier American Grade 1 race. From there, Arrogate can no longer fit his name. There is no claim on this earth this horse is not due. Not even the claim on your attention and admiration, which he undoubtedly deserves.
