Dress to Support Your Favorite Horse at Santa Anita’s Super Saturday

Events / Travel

The eyes of the horse racing world will turn to Santa Anita Park this Saturday as some of the top Thoroughbreds in the world converge in Arcadia, Calif. to make a bid for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships on Nov. 4-5. If you’re heading to the racetrack, below are some ways you can support your favorite runner through fashion!

If you don’t see your horse here, don’t worry! Just look up the name in our search engine and use that horse’s jockey silks to put together your perfect ensemble.

If you see an item in the sets below that you can’t live without, simply click the image to shop the look!

CALIFORNIA CHROME

Hers:

California Chrome’s silks are a mix of silver and wine red; bring those colors into your Santa Anita look by starting with a daytime-friendly metallic dress like this one from Slate & Willow. Then add a pair of pewter wedges from LifeStride that are both stylish and comfortable – the perfect combination for a day at the races! A deep red bag (Bella Handbags) and fascinator with a zipper detail (Rosalie French) elevate the look for World Championships-caliber racing; then add a pair of mirror sunglasses by Choies and a coat or two of Essie’s fabulous Fishnet Stockings (my favorite color!) nail polish. A great pair of industrial-inspired Avon earrings will complete your California Chrome-inspired look for Saturday!

His:

Silver and red are fantastic colors for menswear this fall; start with a pants-and-vest combination in silver gray from River Island; then add a red-and-white check dress shirt from Alfani, a silver-and-red plaid bow tie via ebay, a pair of burgundy socks from Solid Color Neckties, and a pair of Stacy Adams black dress shoes polished to a high shine. Don’t forget a pair of sunglasses, like these from Vans, and you’re off to the races dressed to support California Chrome in style!

HOPPERTURNITY

Hers:

If you love Hoppertunity, you can dress to support him as he once again takes on California Chrome in Saturday’s Awesome Again Stakes. To incorporate his owner Karl Pegram’s yellow and red silks into your look, start with a simple red shift like this retro-inspired example from ChicWish. Then add a fun graphic purse (WithChic) and a pair of gold flats from TopShop. A red fascinator from E4Hats, a charm bracelet from Kenneth Jay Lane and a pair of gold statement shades from RomWe will have you race ready and showing your Hoppertunity pride!

His:

The tricky thing for men supporting Hoppertunity is to wear the red and yellow colors without looking like a hot dog vendor; achieve this by starting with a pair of Nantucket Reds like these from Brooks Brothers, then adding a subtly striped, white and yellow dress shirt from Nautica. A bow tie in red with a subtle yellow pattern like this one from NewChic is perfect for Saturday at Santa Anita; throw on a pair of tried-and-true boat shoes from GBX and a classic pair of sunglasses by Mango Man, and you’re ready to go!

STELLAR WIND

Hers:

If Stellar Wind is your choice in the Zenyatta Stakes, show your love by wearing the colors of owner Hronis Racing’s green and white silks. A perfect, patterned day dress from Scervino Street starts the look, and a full hat from Christine A. Moore (the official milliner of the Breeders’ Cup) is a guaranteed showstopper. Add a pair of trendy, but comfortable, block heel sandals from Steve Madden, a River Island handbag, a set of Belk Silverworks bangles and a pair of Billy the Tree earrings, and you’re ready to support Stellar Wind in the Zenyatta Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday!

His:

Show your Stellar Wind love with a dark green suit like this one from Calvin Klein; then add a crisp white button-down (Madison) and a horse racing-themed green tie like this steal of a deal Ferragamo version found on ebay. A pair of Calvin Klein wingtips are always in style, and keep your socks (Express) on-theme by incorporating Stellar Wind’s colors.

BEHOLDER

Hers:

Beholder has been a fan favorite for years; and if you’re rooting for her in the Zenyatta Stakes, you’ll want to don her owner, B. Wayne Hughes’, racing colors of orange, purple and yellow. Since these are all super-trendy colors for this autumn, you’re going to be able to find a ton of options if you’re shopping for a new look! Start with a pretty sundress like this purple one from Mountain Khakis; then add a killer pair of Miu Miu shoes in the perfect colors, a bright orange handbag from Dasein and a Hat Art by Cathy orange fascinator. A pair of petal-shaped Novica enamel earrings will be your new go-tos, and then incorporate the gold tones of the silks with a Kenneth Jay Lane bracelet and a Berricle choker.

His:

How great is this light purple Estee Lauder blazer? Layer it over a white Nordstrom Men’s dress shirt, then add a pair of dark lavender Daniel Hechter  trousers. A Tommy Hilfiger tie provides an on-point contrast, and the Sock HQ dress socks are absolutely perfect for Beholder fans. Keep your feet happy in a pair of Bruno Homme wingtips, and head to Santa Anita on Saturday celebrating Beholder in style.

KLIMT

Hers:

Klimt is one of the most talked-about 2-year-old racehorses in the nation, and show your support by incorporating his owner Kaleem Shah’s red, white and blue racing colors. I have to admit, this is my favorite set of all that I put together for Super Saturday. After all, where better than the races to wear a parrot-adorned fascinator like this one from Fab Hatters? It goes so well with the bird-print skirt from WithChic, and I added a broad-brim hat from SK Hat Shop, a pair of espadrilles from Beston, a clutch by Monsoon and a halter-neck blouse by Finders Keepers to round out the look. Finish off your Klimt ensemble with a saucy pair of shades like these from Quay Australia, and you’ll be Hollywood-ready at Santa Anita on Saturday!

His:

The men’s Klimt look is classic and chic: start with a blue Manuel Ritz blazer layered over a Lauren Ralph Lauren blue-and-white check shirt. A PenSee red tie with white polka-dots is fun and festive, and a pair of khakis like these from Uniqlo are comfortable and cool. Don’t forget a fun and patriotic pair of socks like these by Stance; and a beautiful pair of dress shoes from Apartment 9 will keep the look dressy enough for a day in the Clubhouse.

STRAIGHT FIRE

Hers:

Sports radio host Jim Rome’s big horse is a 2-year-old worth talking about. If you want to show your Straight Fire love, you can do so by donning the Jungle Racing colors of black, blue and white.  I can’t believe how perfect this Dorothy Perkins dress is for Straight Fire fans; take the look to the track with a Queen Sugar Bee hat, a groovy Under One Sky black and white studded bag and an Intropia cuff bracelet. If the Derek Lam shoes look like they may be a little much for a full day at Santa Anita, be sure to tuck a glam pair of NewChic foldable flats into your bag for foot emergencies!

His:

Make a classic black suit (Surface to Air) perfect for daytime with bright accents like the striped Ike Behar dress shirt, horse-themed Chaps bowtie in Jungle Racing blue and a whimsical pair of horse shoe socks from Absolute Ties. A pair of black Gordon Rush dress shoes will take you from Santa Anita to the office and beyond; and finish off your Straight Fire ensemble with some black sunglasses with bright blue lenses like these from Liive Vision.

AMERICAN CLEOPATRA

Hers:

If you love American Pharoah’s little sister American Cleopatra, you can show your pride by wearing the Zayat Stables bright aqua and gold colors when you go to Santa Anita on Saturday. I love this amazing banana print skirt from Markus Lupfer – Mindy Kaling has it! – and the cheerful, yellow blouse from Pink Queen sets it off perfectly. Add a Valdler turquoise fascinator, a sensational pair of gold brogues from Boo Hoo that I need to have in my life, a pair of statement Valley City shades and Seta Jewelry cocktail ring, and you’re off to the races to show your love for American Cleopatra!

His:

Southern California’s Santa Anita is the perfect place for men to experiment with color in their wardrobes; that’s why I chose this bright but stylish Capobianco blazer for the men’s American Cleopatra look. An LL Bean yellow, white and blue oxford is on-theme and comfortable, and I couldn’t resist these classic Vans in a decidedly non-traditional bright yellow. A pair of khakis (Sonoma) keeps your bottom half in a neutral palette, and be sure to add an official American Pharoah ball cap to show off your family pride!
