If you’re still searching for plans for Fourth of July weekend, there’s no better place to spend it than at a racetrack. It’s an added bonus when that racetrack is located a stone’s throw away from the Atlantic Ocean. Enter a trip to Monmouth Park for the United Nations Stakes. No worries, these locales are nothing like the images you may have in your mind of MTV’s “Jersey Shore.”
Win: The Berkley Oceanfront Hotel
The Rate: $224
The Lowdown: A trip to the track tugs a bit of nostalgia out of even the coldest of hearts, and a visit to The Berkley evokes a similar feeling. The management recently revamped the historic Victorian style framework, following suit of many of the businesses in the Ashbury Park neighborhood. If you dig establishments returned to their former luster, then The Berkley Oceanfront is the place for you.
Place: Molly Pitcher Inn
The Rate: $150
The Lowdown: This spot was previously mentioned as a “Place to Stay” in our guide to visiting Monmouth Park. The Molly Pitcher name is borrowed from the folklore surrounding the hero of the Battle of Monmouth, a pivotal bout in the Revolutionary War, which took place in—you guessed it—Monmouth, N.J. Located on the waterfront in Red Bank, you’re perched in a neat little nook on the shore. Boats, artisanal shopping, and tasty seafood fare are plentiful and all within walking distance.
Show: American Hotel
The Rate: $120
The Lowdown: The American is another boutique spot, featuring a restaurant that is a deluxe diner’s delight. The reasonable rate here allows you to splurge on the plentiful fresh seafood and shellfish on the Market Yard Grille menu. Whereas the previous two are located on the waterfront, The American’s reduced rate comes with an inland location. It’s just a quick 20-minute drive to the track though.
