After riding more than 1,200 winners at home in
Brazil, Cruz moved to Florida in 2000 and quickly proved that he
was a skilled competitor. He was the leading rider at Tampa Bay
Downs during the 2001-2002 season and topped the jockey standings
at Calder in 2003, 2006, 2009 and 2010. Cruz rode in Kentucky in
2011. He has been in the top 15 in the jockey standings at
Gulfstream Park since 2003. Cruz grew up riding jumpers on a farm
in Brazil where his father worked as an assistant trainer for the
