Wild Shot broke his maiden at Churchill Downs in September 2016 and then put together two competitive efforts in major fall stakes races, finishing third to eventual champion 2-year-old Classic Empire in the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity and then second behind McCraken in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. He returned in February 2017 and ran fourth in the Sam F. Davis Stakes, again behind McCraken, in his first start as a 3-year-old.

He followed that up with a rallying third behind Tapwrit and State of Honor in the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby. Wild Shot tired to finish seventh in the Blue Grass Stakes, eliminating a chance of running in the Kentucky Derby, but he rebounded on Derby day to win the Grade 3 Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs.
Trained by Rusty Arnold, Wild Shot is by the young sire Trappe Shot and out of the Storm Cat mare Ranter. He is from the family of top sire Pulpit.
