Untrapped finished second in his career debut at Keeneland Race Course in October 2016 before posting a victory in at Churchill Downs in his second race.
Tested in a graded stakes in his third race, Untrapped finished second in the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes in his graded stakes debut before a runner-up finish to Girvin in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes that placed Untrapped squarely on the Triple Crown trail. He followed with a third-place finish in the Grade 2, $900,000 Rebel Stakes on March 18.

Untrapped continued on the Triple Crown trail, finishing sixth in the Arkansas Derby but his point total was enough to get him in the Kentucky Derby starting gate, where he finished 12th of 20. Connections regrouped and Untrapped reeled off a pair of third-place finishes in the Ohio Derby and Indiana Derby, and a win in the Oklahoma Derby throughout summer 2017. He wrapped up his season with a runner-up effort in the Zia Park Derby in November.
The colt returned at Oaklawn Park in 2018, finishing fourth (twice), second, and third in stakes before a dead-heat runner-up finish in the Grade 3 Pimlico Special on the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes undercard.
