Tricky Escape finished second in each of her first two starts before earning her first win at Laurel Park in February 2017. She then placed in two more races on the main track before improving significantly when switching to turf. She earned the second win of her career on the grass at Laurel Park.

After running fourth in a pair of Grade 3 races on the grass, Tricky Escape earned a breakthrough win in the Grade 3 Violet Stakes at Monmouth Park in August 2017. She subsequently ran second in the Ramsey Farm Stakes at Kentucky Downs and finished third in an allowance race at Belmont Park. She regained her winning form with a victory in the off-the-turf Cardinal Handicap at Churchill Downs on Nov. 18 when she held off Fair Point to prevail by a nose on a sloppy main track.
In her 5-year-old bow, Tricky Escape finished sixth in the Grade 2 Hillsborough Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. She followed with an unplaced finish in the Grade 3 Beaugay Stakes at Belmont Park before bouncing back in a big was with a convincing victory in the Grade 3 Robert G. Dick Memorial Stakes at Delaware Park on July 7. Tricky Escape then drew away to a 3 3/4-length win in the Fasig-Tipton Waya Stakes in August at Saratoga before rallying to win the Ramsey Farm Stakes at Kentucky Downs in September.
