Three Rules opened his career with five consecutive victories in 2016. After winning his career debut and the Birdonthewire Stakes, the Gone Astray colt swept the Florida Sire series, taking the Dr. Fager, Affirmed and In Reality Stakes in August, September and October. Three Rules tasted defeat for the first time when he ran sixth in the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile, but his record of five wins from six starts was enough to earn him the title of 2016 Florida-bred Horse of the Year.
Three Rules opened his career with five consecutive victories in 2016. Three Rules made his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 2 Swale Stakes and finished second. He then finished third in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes after setting the pace, just a half-length behind the runner-up. A fifth-place finish in the Florida Derby prompted a reurn to sprint distances for Three Rules.
In his first start back sprinting, Three Rules ran third in the Chick Lang Stakes on the Preakness under card, but he regained his winning form with a determined victory in the Grade 3 Carry Back Stakes at Gulfstream Park on July 1 that halted a 5-race winless stretch.
