Taptowne broke his maiden at Turfway Park by an impressive 8 1/4 lengths on Dec. 31 of 2010. He placed in the WEBN Stakes and John Battaglia Stakes, and won multiple allowance races over the next year and a half before finding stakes victory in the 2012 Cryptoclearance Stakes.

In 2013, the Tapit gelding won an allowance race and finished second in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap less than month later. Later in the year he won the West Virginia Governor's Stakes and placed second in two Grade 3 races, the Prairie Meadows Cornhusker and the Ack Ack Handicap in preparation for the 2013 Breeders' Cup.
