Takaful briefly became a buzz horse in the Kentucky Derby future books during fall 2016 after he won his debut at Belmont Park by eight lengths. The Shadwell Stable homebred disappointed in his next three races, however, all in stakes, and was given a break after finishing a well-beaten eighth in the Grade 2 Xpressbet Fountain of Youth Stakes.

He returned to the track in July 2017 and impressed with a 5 ¼-length win in an allowance race at Saratoga. In his next start, Takaful set a fast pace and held on well to finish second to Practical Joke in the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Stakes on Aug. 26 at Saratoga.
Following his good showing in the Allen Jerkens, Takaful was shortened up to six furlongs by trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and faced older horses in the Grade 1 Vosburgh Stakes. He stalked pacesetter El Deal through the turn and gamely outdueled that foe to score by a length and earn an automatic berth in the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint.
