Sunbeam broke his maiden in the Louisiana Futurity on New Year's Eve after nearly breaking his maiden in his debut, losing by a nose and finishing 9 1/2 lengths in front of the rest of the field. After breaking his maiden, he won an allowance race and made his stakes debut in the Gentilly by 4 3/4 lengths.
The colt struggled to find success when he finished eighth in the Louisiana Derby, fifth in the Coolmore Lexington Stakes, and sixth in the Matt Winn Stakes. Sunbean finally found victory in the Lousiana Legends Mile Stakes with a 5 3/4 length win.
