After running third in his career debut in August at Del Mar, Sueno won his second start by 4 ¾ lengths two weeks later at the seaside track. The dark bay or brown colt subsequently stretched out to a mile to win the Gold Rush Stakes at Golden Gate Fields by 1 ½ lengths in his final start as a 2-year-old.

Making his first start at three in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes, Sueno led in deep stretch before being passed late in a runner-up finish. Trainer Keith Desormeaux then shipped Sueno to Oaklawn Park for the Feb. 18 Southwest Stakes, bidding for a repeat win in the race after his My Boy Jack won in 2018. Sueno made up ground late in the stretch but settled for second behind longshot Super Steed, earning four more Kentucky Derby qualifying points. Sueno followed with a third-place finish in the $1 million Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby on March 23 at Fair Grounds before running third again in the Grade 3 Stonestreet Lexington Stakes on April 13 at Keeneland.
