Raced by breeder International Equities Holding, Inc., Protonico broke his made in September 2013 by 12 3/4 lengths. A far-back sixth in the Nashua Stakes later that year ended his season and he wasn't seen again until June. However, the June return showed that he hadn't forgotten his winning ways during his break as he won that race by two lengths before finishing third in the Curlin, losing the win in that race by just a head. Protonico won the Smarty Jones Stakes by a half-length before a disappointing effort in the Pennsylvania Derby.

The colt then won the Grade 3 Discovery Handicap and finished third in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap to finish his season.
As a 4-year-old the colt captured the Grade 3 Ben Ali at Keeneland and the Grade 2 Alysheba at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Oaks day.
By leading sire Giant's Causeway, Protonico is out of the mare Alpha Spirit. While Alpha Spirit didn't do much in her two starts on the track, she is out of Chile's Horse of the Year Wild Spirit and a full sister to stakes winner Diva Spirit.
