Patrona Margarita split horses and closed powerfully to win her career debut in June 2017, but she did not appear to care for a sloppy track in the Debutante Stakes at Churchill in her second race. She bounced back to finish third by a neck in the Texas Thoroughbred Futurity before shipping back to Churchill Downs for her graded stakes debut in the Grade 2 Pocahontas Stakes.

In the Pocahontas, Patrona Margarita rated in seventh early before moving up on the final turn and then surging past pacesetter Primo Extremo in the stretch. She opened a clear lead and rolled to a 3 3/4-length victory. The Pocahontas is a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series race for the 14 Hands Winery Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. But, while Patrona Margarita earned an automatic starting spot in the race, she was not nominated to the Breeders' Cup and bypassed the race.
Patrona Margarita finished fourth in her 3-year-old bow in the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes behind Monomoy Girl and followed with a third-place finish behind that familiar foe in the Grade 1 Central Bank Ashland Stakes.
