New York-bred Pat On the Back ran fourth in his career debut but claimed his first victory in his second start with a 3 ½-length runaway Aug. 29, 2016 at Saratoga Race Course. He deftly handled the jump to stakes competition with a nose win in the Aspirant Stakes at Finger Lakes two weeks later and then ran second in the Bertram F. Bongard Stakes Oct. 2 at Belmont Park.
Pat On the Back won the Sleepy Hollow Stakes by 1 ½ lengths before closing out his juvenile campaign with an unplaced finish in the $1 million, Grade 3 Delta Down Jackpot Stakes.

In 2017, Pat On the Back won only one of nine starts, taking the Ontario County Stakes in June at Finger Lakes and he finished third four times in stakes races.
Pat On the Back ran second twice in stakes in his first three races in 2018 before winning the Saginaw Stakes by 1 ¾ lengths in July at Belmont Park. He finished second by a neck in the 2018 Evan Shipman Stakes at Saratoga before winning the Empire Classic by 1 ½ lengths back at Belmont Park. He finished his 4-year-old season with a fifth-place finish in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile Handicap Presented by NYRA Bets.
Pat On the Back was given a few months off after the Cigar Mile. He made his 5-year-old bow in the Affirmed Success Stakes April 26 at Belmont Park, where he finished third. He then won the Commentator Stakes by a nose from Giant Expectations in May at Belmont before a third-place finish in the Tale of the Cat Stakes at Saratoga in August.
On Sept. 21, 2019, Pat On the Back rallied past Prince Lucky in deep stretch to post his first career graded stakes win with a half-length score in the Grade 2, $300,000 Kelso Handicap at Belmont.
