After finishing in the top three in both of his first two career races on the synthetic surface at Del Mar, One Lucky Dane powered to a dominant 9 1/2-length romp in his first start on dirt in a one-mile race at Santa Anita Park. The victory prompted Hall of fame trainer Bob Baffert to enter the Lookin At Lucky colt in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. The colt finished sixth in that race but after winning an allowance, Baffert decided to send him back up to the big leagues where he finished second in the Santa Anita Derby.

One Lucky Dane was a $490,000 purchase at the 2013 Keeneland September yearling sale. He is a half-brother (same dam [mother], different sire [father]) to Grade 3 Western Smoke.
