Mugaritz opened his 3-year-old season with a victory in an allowance race Jan. 1 at Golden Gate and the finished second in the California Derby. After a fourth-place finish in the El Camino Real Derby, Mugaritz was shipped to Kentucky and finished fifth in the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park. Mugaritz closed his 3-year-old season with an allowance win at Golden Gate.

He showed improvement and maturation as a 4-year-old. Mugaritz won back-to-back allowance races at Golden Gate to start his 2019 season and then won the Bull Dog Handicap by 6 ½ lengths at Fresno to earn his first stakes win. After a hard-fought victory in the Joseph T. Grace Stakes at Golden Gate, Mugaritz returned to graded stakes competition and posted a decisive win in the Berkeley Handicap Nov. 30.
