After finishing in the top three in each of his first three races, Mr Vargas posted a front-running, four-length win in September 2017 at Los Alamitos. He shifted back to grass for his next two starts, running second then third at Santa Anita Park and Del Mar, respectively.
After an eight-month layoff, Mr Vargas returned in July 2018 and won an allowance race at Los Alamitos He subsequently finished first in an allowance race in August at Del Mar but was disqualified and place eighth for causing interference in the stretch.

Following another extended layoff of 10 months, Mr Vargas ran fourth in a sprint on the main track at Santa Anita in June 2019. Trainer Brian Koriner opted to try Mr Vargas on turf again in his second start of 2019 and the Midshipman gelding responded with a 2 ¼-length win.
Mr Vargas made his stakes debut in the Grade 3 Green Flash Stakes at Del Mar Aug. 17 and set an uncontested pace before holding off graded stakes winner Eddie Haskell and champion Stormy Liberal.
