Moonster won a one-mile maiden race at Churchill Downs on Sept. 15, 2018, in his second career start. He subsequently was tested in stakes company and was unplaced in both the Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity and the Street Sense Stakes. After another unplaced finish in allowance company, Moonster ran third in an allowance race on Dec. 23 in his final race as a 2-year-old.

Moonster again tested the waters in stakes competition in his fiorst start at three, finishing eighth by 16 ¼ lengths in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 9. Trainer Dale Romans tried him on the synthetic surface at Turfway Park in the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Stakes on March 9, and the Malibu Moon colt passed seven horses in the final three-eighths of a mile to finish third.
