Matterhorn did not make his career bow until November of his 2-year-old season. He won that start but was given time off and debuted as a 3-year-old in February, running tenth in an allowance. The colt then finished third in an Aqueduct allowance and fourth in the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park. The colt was subsequently purchased by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and aimed for a start in the 2014 Belmont Stakes.
