Materiality did not debut until January of his 3-year-old year but made quite an impression once he reached the races. The colt won his first race by a dominant 4 1/4 lengths and made his second start in the Islamorada Handicap. There the colt again drew off to an authoritative victory after stalking the pace set by his stablemate Stanford. The 5 1/4-length win in the 1 1/8-mile race earned him a try in the Grade 1 Florida Derby on the Triple Crown trail.

Materiality fought off Grade 2 winner Upstart to win the Florida Derby in his graded stakes debut and punched his ticket to Louisville for the Kentucky Derby on May 2.
Materiality is by dual Classic-winning sire Afleet Alex and out of the Langfuhr mare Wildwood Flower, making him a half-brother to Grade 2 winner and 2014 Kentucky Oaks runner-up My Miss Sophia. The colt was a $260,000 Keeneland yearling purchase and later a $400,000 Fasig-Tipton Mid-Atlantic 2-year-old-in-training purchase.
