Master Fencer won his first race in his third career start and followed that up with a weight for age victory at Kyoto Racecourse. He finished fourth in the Hyacinth Stakes before a runner-up effort in the Fukuryu Stakes, earning enough points to warrant an invitation to the Kentucky Derby after those ahead of him were not Triple Crown-nominated.
In the Kentucky Derby, Master Fencer got off to a slow starts and trailed the 19-horse field. He made a sustained late run to finish sixth.
