Magnum Moon made his career debut in January 2018 and won a three-quarter-mile sprint by 4 1/2 lengths, earning an eye-catching 106 Equibase Speed Figure. He then stretched out to 1 1/16 miles for an allowance race at Tampa Bay Downs, where he again dominated in a two-length victory.

With two wins under the saddle, Magnum Moon tested stakes competition for the first time in the Grade 2, $900,000 Rebel Stakes on March 17 at Oaklawn Park. He stalked the early pace in the Rebel, took command from pacesetter Title Ready near the top of the stretch, and powered to a 3 1/2-length victory. The win earned Magnum Moon 50 points toward qualifying for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, guaranteeing him a place in the starting gate for the run for the roses on on May 5.
In his final prep race for the Kentucky Derby, Magnum Moon set an leisurely pace in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby and finished the final eighth of a mile in under 12 seconds with an impressive display of stamina to prevail easily.
Sent off at 13.70-1 odds in the Kentucky Derby, Magnum Moon broke in leaving from post position 16 and had a rough trip, finishing a well-beaten 19th to suffer his first career loss.
